Abstract

Background: Blood donation is an essential component of modern healthcare services and plays a vital role in saving millions of lives every year. Adequate knowledge and a positive attitude among community members are important factors influencing voluntary blood donation practices. Despite advancements in medical science, shortage of voluntary blood donors remains a major public health concern. Hence, the present study was undertaken to assess the knowledge and attitude regarding blood donation among adults residing in a community area, Odisha.

Aim: The objectives of the study were to assess the level of knowledge and attitude regarding blood donation among adults, determine the association between knowledge and attitude with selected socio-demographic variables, and identify the correlation between knowledge and attitude regarding blood donation.

Methods: A quantitative research approach with a descriptive cross-sectional design was adopted for the study. The research was conducted among 60 adults residing in a selected community of Sambalpur, Odisha, who were selected using a non-probability convenience sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire comprising socio-demographic characteristics, a knowledge questionnaire, and an attitude rating scale regarding blood donation. The tool was validated by experts and tested for reliability. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, chi-square test, and correlation analysis.

Results: Data were collected using a structured interview schedule, which consisted of three sections: demographic variables, structured knowledge questionnaire, and attitude rating scale regarding blood donation. Content validity of the tool was established by experts in nursing and community health. Reliability of the tool was determined using Cronbach’s alpha method and was found to be reliable.

Conclusion: adults possess acceptable awareness, there is still a need for continuous community education programs to improve knowledge and promote voluntary blood donation practices. Community health nurses play a key role in motivating individuals, organizing awareness campaigns, and strengthening voluntary blood donation programs to ensure adequate blood availability.
